Polar Bear Plunge raises $15,000 for Fisher House
submitted by Augie Peltonen, co-chair of Polar Bear Plunge.
On Monday, Jan 28th, John Hand, Fran Chambers, and Tom Devine took a ride
down to Rockville, Maryland to personally deliver $15,000 to the Fisher House
Foundation. The $15,000 was raised from this years' Brigantine Polar Bear Club.
Most of the Polar Bear committee members are also active members of the Brigantine
Elks Lodge. Chairmen Augie Peltonen and John Hand were very pleased with
this years' attendance. The money for the event was raised by selling commemorative shirts and
donations.
Fisher House is a support system for wounded military and their families. They
provide housing for the wounded troops and their families. They also provide travel
for the families to visit their wounded kids, as well as scholarships.
This years' Polar Bear Plunge had about 3000 spectators at the seawall and about
300 brave souls jumped into the 39 degree water. Tom Devine, owner of the Rod
and Reel Tavern provided an after party. Elks members cooked burgers and dogs
outside the tavern for the plungers.
